Alex, a few questions: what version of ath9k (compat-wireless date?), version of hostapd are you using? What is your ht_capab setting on the AP side? What client chipset and OS are you using? A new hostapd was just released as stable, version 0.6.8, and I'm fighting some issues with it rejecting ht_capab that worked in 0.6.7 at the moment.
