Agreed, the root of the problem in that case is in RFC 4287. More generally it's not worth trying to pin it down since there are a slew of similar issues where the server is ultimately in control. For example, what if I POST an entry and the server: 1. Converts my type="xhtml" atom:title into type="text"? 2. Corrects typos in the text? 3. 'Cleans up' the in HTML to make it valid? 4.
