Except that... a different relation is semantically distinct to a
different type. Sometimes new types are needed.

On the other hand, I'm not convinced I see the argument for making the
application/atom+serv an alternate of anything that already exists.

application/xml is a type only in the same way that text/* can be
considered to be a type (except orthogonally, if you see what I mean).
