+1. Serving atom up at application/xml is perfectly acceptable and will
render in the browser. Look at Sam Ruby's feed as an example.

The least they could do is use application/xml. (I'm using that at the
moment...) For the rest, bug browser people about it. Opera, for one,
parses
everything +xml as XML.
