That's certainly one way of doing things, but not the only way. I'm fairly sure there are existing clients that rely on the thread count (using slash:comments) to determine whether a replies feed has changed. This makes sense when there is a separate feed for each reply - instead of connecting to dozens of feeds looking for updates (and hoping they support 304), you just download the main feed looking for a change in the thread count.

If you don't like these attributes, that's fine - nobody is forcing you to use them. But don't assume that everyone wants to do things the same way as you. Don't try and prevent people from doing something different to you just because you personally don't like their choice.
