Yes. > If not, is there any reason why it is being held back at the prior > version? Yes. :) (see below) > I believe there was some talk on the mailing list a couple of months > or so ago regarding the nvidia packaging, so no sure if this is > related to that discussion or not. No, that is not directly related to the default nvidia driver, which is what the nvidia-graphics-<version> package does. > I know I can just manually install the necessary '195.36.31' packages > either with 'yum install nvidia-graphics195.36.31' or by downloading > the packages and installing via rpm, but it seems to me that when I've > done something like this in the past I was never able to get things > back "in sync" so to say, and always had to go through a more manual > process when Nvidia gets updated. That was perhaps the other issue that has been fixed by now. The idea behind the whole setup is as follows: o In the past there were often different driver versions suited for different purposes like a version working better for 3D gamers, other versions working better for video playback etc. This isn't as dramatic these days, but it turned out that it would be nice to have a method of having multiple drivers installed and being able to choose from, or at least allowing each users his or her own choice. o The packages are named nvidia-graphics<version>, e.g. the version is attached to the name as well to make the different in rpm's/yum's/etc view so as to be coinstallable. o A fake selector package "nvidia-graphics" points to the default version that should work for the standard user. This package is an empty package that simply pulls in the latest stable-proven driver. For example we now have new drivers 256.35. They are available for everyone to install and test, but are not yet the default for "nvidia-graphics". Once proven to be reliable the nvidia-graphics package will switch to these drivers. Since this is a manual task and asynchronous to the actual driver availability and packaging it is sometimes forgotten like in the case from 195.36.24 to 195.36.31. You can always still yum install nvidia-graphics195.36.31 to get the driver in question (if not there is a bug that should be reported), and ideally you can poke the list or me to update the selector package. :) In a nutshell: Thanks for pointing this out, it was updated to 195.36.31, but not yet 256.35. If I don't forget, it will be updated again in a couple of days unless we get bad feedback on 256.35. -- Axel.Thimm at ATrpms.net
