On mythtv 0.23 I was never able to use anything different than /dev/dsp when configuring my soundcards on myth-setup. This is a design issue, and I cannot give common sense to anybody. I do not watch a lot of TV, really. However, I have a small application, written in python, that uses mplayer/mencoder/xawtv to control my capture card. http://orion.lcg.ufrj.br/python/figuras/tktv.png http://orion.lcg.ufrj.br/python/figuras/tvtime-output-06:46:45_PM.png http://orion.lcg.ufrj.br/RPMS/src/tvtools-1.0-5.fc12.src.rpm It can record (and watch simultaneously, the way myth do) in Xvid, watch live TV, without recording, change the channels, and it is lirc controlled. It DOES work with pulse audio and implements a loopback if the sound card asks for it (although mplayer can do this). I prefer to invest my time implementing a scheduler to recording, than keeping trying to configure mythtv sound. And mainly, I do not have to transcode anything for watching the produced avi on an external dvd/divx player. Generally, I only watch football games and MMA competitions anyway. This application proves that it is perfectly possible to record directly in Xvid and have a synchronized sound, even using pulse audio. The problem is that I do not think it is easily configurable for those who do not know mplayer pretty well ... -- Paulo Roma Cavalcanti LCG - UFRJ
