If you make any progress on HDMI audio let me know. The only way I've  
been able to get HDMI Audio to work is using the following combinations:

- ALSA 1.0.19 or newer
- Open-source "nv" driver
- Ubuntu 8.04, 8.10 (and probably 9.04)

Or...

- ALSA 1.0.19 or newer
- nVidia restricted driver 100.14.23 (which only runs on older kernels  
- for me that means Ubuntu 8.04 or prior)
- Ubuntu 8.04

Since I need OpenGL support I had to go with the second combination  
(the open source nv driver doesn't do 3D / OpenGL)
