Kendrick,

I didn't make any more progress. I ended up using Ubuntu 8.04 with
nVidia 100.14.23. But that combination had problems because you cannot
underclock the nVidia GPU with version 100.14.23 of the driver
(underclocking is supported but doesn't work for the 7xxx series GPUs
in that version). This causes video lockups and strange green
artifacts in the video occasionally. The only fix for that was to run
at 1080p resolution which is a little too much for the Apple TV. It
works, but it takes a lot of memory, so the menu screens in MythTV
load really slowly and Linux is always swapping stuff out to disk and
back which makes it respond very slowly at times.

I've actually given up on the Apple TV. It was a fun experiment, but
it doesn't quite have enough power to do what I wanted. I think with
more memory it would be fine.

The aplay -l shows "ATI HDMI" on my system as well. In the Apple TV,
the nVidia chip does not provide the audio codec. The HDMI audio codec
is on the SiI 1930 chip which drives the HDMI output. The ALSA drivers
report this chip as an ATI card presumably because some ATI card uses
this chipset as well. You can read more here:
