Yes, that was my second thought too.  I use Ido-mode.  It does do strange things
sometimes.  I disabled and re-enabled it and I can't reproduce the issue any
more.

Ido-mode is great, but when it does something unexpected, I find it difficult to
track down what causes it.  (Assuming that Ido-mode is indeed the culprit.)
I'll test some more to see if the problem is gone or returns.
