Re: When is the last time anyone has read a braille book?

@Wanderer, funny you say braille litracy is respected by the sighted world, I've found the opposite, sinse after all only blind people read braille much less can write it. actually i found much more acceptance when I started typing, e-mailing and using the internet, though admitedly there was an environmental change.

@Nocturnus, I'm not sure on the funding thing with education sinse the hole adminstration is different in Britain, however sausage factory type of teaching where ticking the right boxes is more important than actually making sure someone learns something is a universal problem. I could go into a long rant on production line thinking but I won't, though I fully agree on time, pace, attention span and easy satisfaction being the thieves of contemplation. Actually it's a dichotomy I'm noticed hugely in society. Where in previous eras having "a job" took some degree of skill and was expected to occupy the full attention, these day s "work" is getting more and more .repetitive and pointless for the majority of people, people being turned into machines. As a consequence, people ar losing the capacity for crytical thought and contemplation and just wanting instant stimulation as a break from tedium if nothing else. Really, we're breeding a race of idiot children who spend every day in detention copying out lines and so missbehave like hell when they don't get their dayly bar of candy

Okay, I'll put the synicism away now big_smile.

However, one point you raise I do find interesting, that of audio textbooks. Actually, audio is how I read most of my papers for my doctorate, sinse with the amount to read, the rather specialized way in which most philosophy is written, and above all the profound difficulty of skim searching it's easier to have them read than either scan them or wo rse, try in braille. i actually find text books in braille more cumbersome simply because the longer time of concentration means I cannot be fully engaged with the text and ideas presented, especially in complex arguements or difficult material.

The  same would  be true if I read an informational book for pleasure, albeit I usually restrict my reading to fiction of one sort or another.

as I said, I'm not anti braille at all, even for me who o prefers audio there are occasions it's useful, and of course there are lots of people who aren't me and have different requirements for the optimum absorbtion of information, however my concern is more  with the future of braille given it's lack of technological intigration sinse I fear unless! we get that cheap full screen display braille will disappear just because of lack of availability and expense.
