Re: how far have we really taken these rules on the forum!

@Simter, you didn't even email me back to let me know everything was working. I only realized it was you when I read multiple posts matching your speech patterns. No, you absolutely do not have to bow and scrape for that. But there was absolutely nothing here, and you've gotten yourself in hot water before. I guess what I'm saying is that I hoped that after we did you a bit of a favour and pounced on the account-theft issue, the least you could do was not keep rocking the boat when it comes to rule-breaking. I called that out, and I stand by it. It doesn't mean I don't like you as a person or that I have less respect for what you do in general. Just don't break the rules, all right?

DanGero, you make the argument that Liam, Aaron Baker and Yukio, specifically, either had access to sound libraries or shelled out for them. Fine. Okay. That's great. So why is Pragma given a get-out-of-jail free card on this, so to speak? Is this an indication that anyone who claims not to have money should be allowed to use copyrighted assets? Because that's the trap you just ran yourself into.

If things tighten too much, or if too many draconian actions take place, yes, it's a risk to the community. But given how many times this particular bit of rhetoric has been brandished with no tangible results, I've stopped being worried about it. In any case, I daresay I've got a pretty good notion of how big a perceived threat is, vs. how big a real threat is. Some people are pissed, but they represent a loud minority. I obviously don't want people to leave, but I'm also not going to start getting timid and mouselike just because of the fear that someone might leave. At the end of the day, I have a forum to help run, and sometimes that means doing things or saying things that one or more users may not like.

If I had the ability to sound design, I would have offered my support to Pragma years ago. For a comparable example, when I reached out to Aaron Baker in 2016 about his Manamon script, I told him I would fix it for free and without accreditation; that's how much of a problem I thought it was. So if I had the chops, I'd help here. I don't though. And obviously, some of you don't either. That's fine. As I clearly pointed out in a past post, not all of us are in a position to help. But to my knowledge, until very, very recently - spurred on by this thread itself, in fact - there has been no concerted effort to help Pragma make a game that has few or no copyrighted assets. It won't happen overnight, and expecting one person to donate hundreds of resources immediately and for nothing is not reasonable. So, uh, it's a cooperative game, why not make the fixing of the game, or the attempt at least, a collaborative effort? I've seen this community do some pretty neat things when it bands together. I'm so glad there's a thread on the dev forum for this now.

Oh, also? You're trying the "you don't understand because you haven't played" angle. Remember that thing I said which basically boils down to how you don't know me? Never has it been more evident than when I read that particular bit of silliness. I have played several Mario games, many Sonic games, Zelda games, and many, many pokemon games. In their respective universes, I like many of those sounds, retro feel and all. They evoke fond memories, and not a few painful ones, since for many of the games I couldn't play, I was fortunate enough to watch my brother enjoy, and he's dead now. I even go onto YouTube sometimes and listen to streams and let's-plays of some of these games precisely because I enjoy them - and because I'm blind, that largely means the sounds - a great deal. To put a sharp point on it, I sometimes feel that these games and their soundscapes help me feel closer to my brother, so that's one of the reasons I enjoy them. It's sometimes a little painful, but oftentimes, the nostalgia is worth is.
So, yeah. Open mouth, insert feet. You clearly don't know me, so stop making inferences that are going to blow up in your face. Thanks for coming out.
