Now, they don't control different letters, at least not the way you think. There are two lines which are, in the beginning, identical. The first line will never change, that's the encrypted version and will stay that way. The second line is, as I said, the same in the beginning, but this line you can actually change and get a English text out of it. The two spinners are used as follows: One of them (sorry I can't remember which one) selects a letter you want to change. The other changes that letter. For example, let's assume you have found out that the last word is worm, but the line says xast instead of worm. Now, you must turn one spinner to x (to select it) and the other to w (to replace it). Next, the program will replace all letters x in the text with the letter w. Your word at the end now reads wast. Next, you would set one spinner to a and the other to o. Every a will now be replaced by o and the last word will read wost. Now, replace s with r like before and finally, swap t with m. Finally, the last word actually reads worm. But you have not just written the word worm correctly, no, you have also changed every x to w, every a to o and so on. That means you can be sure that whenever there appears the letter o in the text, this o must be correct. And that's how you work out the unknown words.
