Accessible Chess?

So I want to test and grow my brain's logic capabilities with something other than computer problems, and I figured a good logic puzzle for that would be Chess. Sudoku is a bit much for me and I don't think I could ever play that in software. I'd prefer to have the ability to play against either another person or the computer, with a difficulty level, though these don't necessarily need to be in the same service. I've heard of Quenton C's playroom having chess support, but is it decent? For a newbie chess player, would it be friendly? I've never much liked Quenton C's UI. And how are the bots on it?
So basically what are your recommendations for accessible ways I can play chess on my computer or iPhone with purely audible interaction?
