Re: I think I screwed up majorly regarding school

@11
Yeah, but here's the thing.  Professional-level programming is only like half programming.  College is less than half programming.  I think you have strange ideas about what this looks like.

To give you some idea, I'm at a somewhat small startup which has barely any procedures, and I just spent a week mostly not programming so that we could write a tech spec for what I'm doing next.  A good chunk of next week will be finishing that, plus the Q1 kick-off stuff, where instead of programming we all go spend time learning about the other projects going on.  A good chunk of my job is also reviewing code by others, in order to provide feedback.

If you get into programming as a job, you're not getting paid to do your hobby.  You're getting paid to do very specific things that your bosses tell you to do, and a lot of those things are going to be not programming, or not programming in ways you enjoy, or not programming with the tools/languages you want to use.  College is even worse: lots of things like liberal arts, lots of math, etc.  All of that actually helps, because  programming itself is actually a terrible source of ideas for software to work on and because a lot of that math comes in handy.  I use quite a bit of the stuff that most people below my level of skill think of as annoying math that no one needs every day, when it comes to things like reasoning about worst cases and stuff.

It's not at all inaccurate to describe most well-paying jobs as like college, but instead of getting a lower grade you make less money and/or get fired.  You'll pretty much always have assignments with specific requirements and deadlines and things like that.  One of the biggest fantasies of the modern world is this idea that you're going to enjoy your job.  Yes, a small percentage of people do, but I wouldn't count on it.
