I think what you're paying for with the benchmark DAC is the balanced outputs, calibration pots, and the variety of inputs. I've looked at the internals - it's a simple design, but definitely well executed and reasonably priced for a specialty component. Not sure if I like the sample rate conversion, but this trick does yield good measured specs. Still, I'd be surprised if SB2/3 didn't match it in subjective blind tests - they sound the same to me.
