Comparing a high-end external DAC to the stock SB is unfair, IMHO. Full mods by Bolder or Red Wine Audio cost around $500, or about half of what a Benchmark costs, with more or less the same advantages but with less circuitry, less cabling, and higher-end passive parts in the modded SB.
