I also thought of another option. Since the full signal from the SB3 is
plenty large enough for the amp, can't I buy some kind of passive
pre-amp (attenuator?) to put in between the DAC and the amp? Then I
could max the digital signal in the SB3. I just can't be sure whether
the effects of digital volume control are worse than introducing
another component, even if it is "passive".
