Because SlimServer is flawed as it stands in not being multi-threaded
and being very, very slow at times. Java has some good features for
supporting threads and runs very fast on modern VMs. The SlimServer
library scan times alone are enough to make me switch to another
product today. 

You also have to examine whether this is the right foundation for the
server over the next few years as competition hots up. I don't think it
is, based on my software development experience, but everyone is free to
disagree. My company uses Perl and Java and in my experience Perl is
good for building software applications, not being the software
application.

All my opinion only, of course, but it is based on using all the
aformentioned technologies and feedback from developers on their
strengths and weaknesses.
