One other significant advantage from the current perl implementation is that
it is relatively easy to make changes and there is an established community
building new features.

While this is also possible with open source in any language I believe it
would take a long time to rebuild the community.

One of the big 'features' of slimserver is that it is the development is
highly responsive to what the market wants, because the market develop and
contribute it.

I haven't seen any other open source project with as much real development
shared in a wide community (except possibly firefox, but I don't actively
participate in that community to know)
