I'm struggling with the same question. In my case, I've set the output of my (brand new, thank you) Benchmark DAC1 to "calibrated" and I'm running the SqueezeBox at full volume. Thus, I'm doing all volume adjustment using the pre-amp's (Adcom GFP-710) volume control. This setup sounds OK to me, though I haven't really checked it against the alternative, which is to eliminate the pre-amp altogether and drive my power amps directly from the DAC1.
Speaking of which, does anyone know if it's "OK" to use both the unbalanced RCA and balanced XLR analog ouputs on the DAC1 simultaneously? I have two amps (ATI 1502s) that I want to drive.
