If you'd like to use the digital volume control, but still want to
preserve as much resolution as possible, try adding a fixed passive
attenuator just before your power amp.

My SB3 hasn't arrived yet, but I tried this with an NAD 118 digital
preamp, which has the same problem of losing resolution as you lower
volume. It did wonders for the sound quality, since I listen quietly
most of the time.

Look at the voltage output of your DAC compared to the maximum voltage
in for your amp. If your amp's limit is 1V and your DAC is putting out
2V at full volume (0dB), you'll need at least a 3dB attentuator to not
overload the amp. If you never listen at that peak level, try a bigger
attenuator. I used a 12dB attenuator, which puts the maximum volume
just at the level it's uncomfortable. YMMV
