I'm running a DEQ in the living room and have tried a few methods. I'm doing something similar to what Mike has done, with the variation that I have negated all boosts, so that only cuts are present. Each band is either flat or cut.
Also I preset the curve to slope down (bass boost) before running the autoeq process. Althoug since I have a sub now, I might rerun with a flatter target curve. I think the microphone is a requirement.
