It is almost certain that the perceived volume level with the squeezebox is not quite as high as with the cd player. Since you have auto gain enabled the difference is even greater. It is almost impossible to do side by side tests without the proper instruments to level out the volume. Only a slightly higher volume can make a huge difference in bringing out more bass, highs and detail. Especially consumer products seem to only sound good in a very narrow volume band. Turn up the volume slightly when listening to the squeezebox and it will sound as good as the cd.
