I think *slimpy* and *Pale Blue Ego* brought up good points, that the slight volume decrease from the SB may contribute to the perception of slight muddiness, and the receiver's digital signal processing may be adding a secondary A->D->A conversion cycle.
I will try switching the inputs and cables, though, to see whether the receiver is behaving better on one input than the other. I'm using the nightly 6.2.2 (3/31/06) with FW 36. I haven't yet tried transcoding to AIFF rather than FLAC, but will do so later today.
