Quite true.  I think *slimpy* and *Pale Blue Ego* brought up good
points, that the slight volume decrease from the SB may contribute to
the perception of slight muddiness, and the receiver's digital signal
processing may be adding a secondary A->D->A conversion cycle.

I will try switching the inputs and cables, though, to see whether the
receiver is behaving better on one input than the other.

Out of curiosity, what versions of the server and FW are you using? 
I'm using the nightly 6.2.2 (3/31/06) with FW 36.  I haven't yet tried
transcoding to AIFF rather than FLAC, but will do so later today.
