I'm thinking the problem might be in using the analog inputs of your
receiver.  Your receiver may be digitizing the signal from the analog
inputs.

If that's the case, then you've got the SB doing a D-->A conversion,
then the receiver doing an A-->D conversion to allow surround
processing and other stuff, then the receiver is doing another D-->A
conversion to the amp section.

Even if the SB3 DAC is better then the one in the receiver, going
through the extra conversions will muddy the sound.

Try the SB3 to the digital input and it should sound a lot better.
