If you're going to do this as a 'hobby', you need a listening position
where your head and the two mains form a triangle.

Stand mounted speakers could be pulled out in front of the piano
occasionally, rendering the couch a sweetspot. A powered subwoofer
could then be placed discreetly, with the bonus of keeping the lows
halfway predictable no matter the placement of the 'bookshelf'
speakers.

Inconvenient- yes, but you won't understand what 'imaging' is any other
way than having a triangle. Floorstanders wouldn't be as convenient to
move around, and their bass would suffer from random placement.

In the meantime you could experiment (a lot) with listening
position/speaker placement before spending _any_ money. How does your
system sound when you sit on the floor between the speakers, around two
meters away? If you toe the speakers in a bit, you won't get as many
side reflections off the piano. Experiment with toeing until you can
get a solid center image from the nearfield seat. You could easily
cover the piano with a blanket, I read that's what Rudy Van Gelder did
in the studio (too bad I _wanted_ to hear *that* piano :-)

I suppose it would help to know: are you looking for decent sound
throughout the area, or great sound in the sweetspot?
