You are clearly moving in the right direction.
In general, speakers don't sound very good against a wall.
They don't sound good against a side wall, and they don't
sound good against a back wall. Thus putting them in a corner
is very, doubly bad unless they are old style Klipshorns.

The sad reality is that proper audiophile positioning
is to keep the speakers several feet, often ten feet, from any
wall. This not only fixes boomy bass, but allows time for
signal to be delayed before it reaches your ears, or more
precisely, lets the direct signal reach your ears and lets
the reflected signals be delayed enough that your brain can
separate them. Since the speed of sound is fixed, and your brain
can't separate signals that are too close together, there is a limit
where having the speakers too close to walls just smashes the
sounds together.

The bad part is that the number of feet required is about 5 feet,
and unless you are single, the WAF of having speakers 8 feet
from walls is near zero.

But some time when the SO is out of the house. try moving the
speakers and putting them in stands
in a room at least 12x15. You will be amazed.
