For the headphone test, I brought the SB into the same room with my
computer.  For the speaker test, I had to walk into the other room,
make the change, walk back, listen a bit, then restart the track.

You have to change the setting on the server, and then restart the
track to make sure it's actually changed.  You can verify this by
trying to ff or rewind - if it works, you're streaming flac.

I don't hear a difference on mine (using analogue outs, although I also
did a quick listen with the digital outs -> DAC AH), and I think my ears
are reasonably good - I'm an (amateur) musician since age 4, come from a
musical family, have been studying and listening to music my whole life.
Furthermore I can hear higher frequencies than most people (for example
the noise of a TV screen, which is around 16 kHz).  So I don't think
there's anything wrong with my ears.  

If you hear a difference, maybe your SB is broken and you should send
it back for repair/exchange.
