I can't detect any difference in my system - but my SPDIF is getting a lot of "help" before the DAC thanks to a jitter decorrelator and a new clock. Maybe the additional load of the client-side FLAC processing is causing PSU or clock related timing/jitter problems? If so, this should be measurable on a scope...
