Equalizers typically totally mangle frequency dependant phase.
Really, really expensive ones do less damage than affordable ones.

In theory, a digital equalizer could use infinite impulse response
filters and not mangle the phase at all, but most computers don't
calculate all that well with infinite numbers. So the approximations
here and there don't matter all that much, right?

I believe that proper phase relationships between frequencies
within music are critical. The human ear/brain is very sensitive
to phase differences (at least above 200 hZ). But it is only my
belief, not proven fact.
