Jack,

I think I may have lost the plot here...

You swapped the left/right channels and the sound is transformed?

CliveB mentioned that the change might simply be down to you having
"accidently" cleaned the connections - and a bad connection would give
the sound you describe (scratchy, little bass, artificial detail i.e.
distortion).

Would you mind swapping back to see if the sound changes back to "bad"
or if it now sounds good regardless of l/r channelling?

If the sound does go back to "bad", something is more fundamentally
wrong elsewhere in your setup...

Secondly, I'm not quite sure why you'd want to replace the SB3 with a
USB DAC/PC Server setup? - You've already got the best server software
available - and it was free! (ie SlimServer).
No USB DAC I've heard (yet) has been worth listening to - and I can't
see the point of running a long USB cable from PC to DAC - if wireless
is a problem for you, you'd be better off with a long ethernet cable to
the SB!

Speaking personally, after years of combining PC's and audio in various
ways for recording purposes, I'd try and steer clear of any electrical
connection between PC's and audio - toslink between DAC and SB can
really help here, although ultimately there will be routes in via the
mains/earthing - and the air (RF/EMI).
I think that putting the computer as far (physically and electrically)
as possible away from your dacs & amps is a good idea.

As you've already got great software AND one of the best digital
transports available, the most improvement soundwise you can get would
be to upgrade your amp/speakers and get some form of room correction in
place - these things could be "chalk and cheese" improvements compared
to the relatively minor changes available from cables, DAC's, PSU's
etc.

All this IMHO of course and YMMV (etc etc)
Cheers,
Phil
