As for toslink (at the risk of much ridicule) I'd say anything will do and the shorter the better. Toslink and coax SPDIF are fundamentally different regarding RFI and edge transition issues. Provided the fibre optic cable is not damaged it either works or it doesn't. Sadly, coax is a whole different ballgame...
