Question: What do you think about the new SD NAS device?

- Awesome! Where can I get one?
- Nice. I'll put that on my wish list.
- Not for me, but it sure is pretty.
- Lame idea. Have the SD folks lost their minds?

No, I wouldn't say that at all. But it depends on what you ask of it.
The Infrant NASs were file servers well before they were running
SlimServer. I wouldn't use one as the primary network storage for a
dozen graphic artists, but the performance is more than adequate for a
small office and certainly for most home use.

You need gigabit Ethernet for a home file server? Gigabit Ethernet
only became affordable within the past couple of years, and 100 Mbps is
still the rule for user connectivity on most networks.

I know replacing my 10/100 switch with a gigabit switch helped my
throughput to/from my ReadyNAS considerably. Overall, it can't keep a
gigabit pipe filled, but it obviously outruns 100 Mbps Ethernet, if
only in bursts.

I have the older model ReadyNAS 600 with the squirrel cage fan. I
don't find it noisy at all, but then I don't have it in my listening
room. The newer fans probably cool better, although mine sits in an
un-air conditioned office all summer with no issues. If you build a
file server with a higher horsepower CPU and multiple disk drives,
you'll have to provide adequate cooling. While you can make it
relatively quiet, it can get expensive. The best thing to do is just
put the server/NAS somewhere in your home where you won't hear it.
