MAREO is a great tool for ripping to multiple formats automatically (I rip to FLAC and VBR mp3 for portables). Can be a little tricky to get setup but once setup requires no maintenance, it just works in the background getting the job done. I set it to send FLACs to one directory and MP3s to a separate one, then I use the MP3 directory for my portable devices.
