One thing I'd say about the in ear canal type (shure etc) is that they
take some getting used to in terms of comfort! Now I'm in danger of
starting a war here but I personally didn't rate the sound of the E3's
(which I bought on 'net recommendation after hearing how good they
are).

Could be that I've been spoiled by my main system - that's not really
the point, it just goes to reiterate the point that sound "quality" is
a very personal thing.

(currency not weight) a good pair of conventional earphones would beat
the in ear type in the same price range - I heard a really nice pair of
AKG's in the apple store recently that delivered plenty of bass and
still classified as "portable", just.
