I agree that IEM are not good for long sessions, because of comfort.
However, most headphone folks concur that real IEMs (as opposed to
cheapo earbuds) are less likely to promote hearing loss than normal
headphones. The IEMs seal out outside sounds, and thus let you listen
to music at a lower sound pressure level than you would if you were
trying to overcome outside sounds. Think of it as improved
signal-to-noise ratio. If the noise is lower, you need less signal to
get the same ratio.
