It's called the "placebo effect". If you can only hear (or measure)
something like this in the absence of scientific controls, then it's
your imagination.  

It works exactly the same way that a sugar pill can ACTUALLY CURE all
sorts of things if your doctor tells you it will. For this reason, the
FDA requires double-blind tests of new drugs against a placebo. The
body has even been shown to _physically_ respond to saline solution in
the same way as morphine, if the patient thinks he's receiving more of
it after a dose of the real thing. 

PS It's getting really hard to tell when you all are joking or not...
