It works exactly the same way that a sugar pill can ACTUALLY CURE all sorts of things if your doctor tells you it will. For this reason, the FDA requires double-blind tests of new drugs against a placebo. The body has even been shown to _physically_ respond to saline solution in the same way as morphine, if the patient thinks he's receiving more of it after a dose of the real thing.
