You have to pause the music before the change occurrs. At least in my setup which includes a server side translation of FLAC into WAV. (You can verify that you are doing it correctly a couple of times by monitoring tha analog outputs.) Restarting a song might work too, but pausing is the most useful thing for comparing "before and after". My digital output is variable, but maxed out when listening critically.
