I'm both, I have an honours degree in Applied Physics and I'm a CTO for
software products, although I was also an electronics engineer as well
for several years.

Breakthroughs in science are at the fringes of knowledge, not at the
macroscopic level where audio operates. We haven't re-written  the
theory of how sounds propogates recently becuse the kinds of sub-atomic
processes that you keep mentioning do not have human-discernable effect
at audible frequencies or pressure levels. 

It isn't about new theories, it's about the economics of building
components. Military application with big, big budgets can create far
more accurate and sensitive equipment than commercial enterprises.

History tells us that breakthroughs come where existing theories break
down and no longer apply. That just isn't the case here - we're talking
about low frequency AC voltage and pressure waves in air that behave in
a very predictable way.
