Thanks. As a music prof. I certainly understand the need for
background. Sounds like my trying to read that text would be like
trying to write or analyze a fugue w/o the 2 years of theory courses
needed to understand just the basics.

It takes a while just to acquire and understand the vocabulary of music
in order to verbalize about it. 
My brother has the math chair at a university. He is a topologist
(Bonhoffer linear equivalents?) 
haven't the slightest idea what that means. OTOH he doesn't quite get
set analysis  or Shenkerian aalysis either, so I guess we are even :-)
