It would completely stifle innovation.  Manufacturers who wanted to
stay in business would simply concentrate on acheiving the best set of
results, and sod what it actually sounded like.  This is what happened
to hi-fi in the 70s.

I was in a well-known (in the UK) box-shifting electrical outlet the
other day, and they had a sign with a checklist of the important things
to take into consideration when buying audio equipment.  Top of the list
was how may CD draws it had.  So how do you think a Squeezebox would
fair on that one?
