I've now plugged in my SB2 and synced it to the transporter so I can change between the two with a button press on my remote. After quite a bit of unscientific flicking between the two sources, my wife and I can definitely tell the difference. Further more, my wife was able to consistently identify the transporter with her eyes closed and me not telling her which source was which (I didn't try).
One thing that did surprise me was how good the sb2 is. All the differences I'd at first identified in the transporter were still there in the sb2 (I find this is always the case when I listen to new gear then go back to the old). The transporter is all about subtleties. The soundstage is definitely better, there is definitely more detail, there is more space to the sound and there's more oomph to the dynamics. To quote my wife, "it sounds like something has opened up and let more air in". However, you need to listen carefully to hear this! If you're not really paying attention, you could miss the change between the sources. I think you'd pick it up in the overall sound over prolonged listening, however. Bottom line - think carefully before spending considerably more than on your other components! It may well be true that you can achieve better improvements through relative improvements in your amp, speakers etc. You wouldn't end up with something looking as good as the transporter, however, and I certainly don't regret it.
