You should test this hypothesis and be sure for your self before you take all the time to re-rip all of your library. I believe that FLAC sounds better, but that is only true with my system. With your system, you are the only one can can be sure.

(sorry for that). I’m simply curious about the Transporter. Obviously,
it should sound a lot better than the SB3. I’m simple looking for
feedback from people who have both units or people who have had the
change to evaluate both units. I’m curious in how they do compare, and
how much difference there is in sound quality between them.

I have a Transporter and several SB1s, including an SB1 driving a Benchmark DAC-1. I care a lot about sound quality. I can't compare the SB3 to the Transporter just because I haven't touched an SB3.

My Transporter sounds good. I also like the looks and the knob.
I have not decided, yet, if I like it better than the Benchmark's sound, or if I will sell the Benchmark. I am pretty sure I don't need both, but I haven't decided.

You are the only person who can say if it is worth $1700 more.

I would suggest that a Transporter is not going to be "worth" the $1700 unless you have either a spare $1700 available (there is a 30 day guarentee) or unless you have a fairly decent audio system to use with it.

I can see that a very good system could be made with just a Transporter and some $2000 self powered speakers. And perhaps the same money ($2000) could buy a carefully selected amp and speaker setup.

I know it sounds good with my $2000 Classe amp, $2000+ Sonus Faber speakers and a $2000 REL subwoofer, in my room, which has as much acoustic treatment as I can get approved by the WAF/Decorating commitee.

I would not recommend spending the extra $1700 on a Transporter if the rest of your system was some low end complete system, but it is your money, not mine, so you have to decide.

There are other alternatives. Would you be better off with the Transporter or 150 more CDs?
