I would be willing to bet a fair amount on the relevant factor being
the contact properties (forces, cleanliness, etc), rather than the
actual cabling.

Every single time I don't like the sound of my system it's the
contacts' fault, and contact cleaning etc has made a much bigger
difference than the actual cables in use. (Day and night type of
differences.)
