I've owned the Genelec 8020s since May. I've got a Redwine Audio modded
SB3 hooked up to them via a Creek OBH-12 passive remote attenuator. If
I didn't have other sources to use the Creek would be unneeded as there
are front volume controls on the 8020s to limit sound levels in the
danger range. I really like the 8020s a lot. Very flat frequency
response and a surprising level of volume given the size. The all metal
construction and integrated grills make them virtually bullet-proof and
the integrated pods are both functional and attractive. The amount of
bass is impressive for a speaker this small.
I listened to these for about 2 weeks 'naked' I was impressed
with the mid-range clarity but not quite up to the magic of my Visaton
B200 Omega Aperiodic 8s (then again, nothing I've heard is). The
extreme highs are far superior to the Omegas though. As I like to
listen at fairly loud levels, I decided to get a Sunfire Super Junior
sub to relieve the 8020s of extreme bass, get lower extension, and more
headroom for the 8020s. This arrangement has worked out very well. The
crossover in the sub works well enough to make the transition from sub
to satellites seamless. The bass is much tighter, and none of the
doubling that was apparent at loud levels of the 8020s 'naked' is gone.
While the price of the Sunfire would put you well over your budget I'd
thought I'd give you the info to give a little perspective.
While I have not heard the other recommended speakers given here,
I have talked to someone I respect who loved the sound of the JM Focals
iCub a lot. I am partial to sealed subs though so I ruled these out.
I would think that either the AudioEngines or the Aegos, with the
Sunfire Super Junior, would give you compelling choices in you budget
range. Hope this helps.
