I've been looking for several months now at buying a new hifi set for the new house. The budget was about 2500 (roughly equals $2500). This took a new turn after I discovered Squeezebox. Especially after playing around with SoftSqueeze the past week, I'm totally convinced that I want to have a Squeezebox. I also decided not to go for a NAS, considering the many posts on performance issues, while the SlimServer on my new PC works very well, especially with the web interface. The latter is almost a requirement, since we have several IP devices (laptops, ipaqs, psps,...) in the house with which we could control the Squeezebox. Considering that I also need a 500G harddisk, I'm left with a budget of 2000 now. I'm left with a dilemma though: digital or analogue.
Basically the question I have is: how decent is the analogue out of the SB ? If it is very decent, I guess that spending 2000 on amp+speakers may yield me better results than spending the same amount of money on dac+amp+speakers. The gain in using the digital out may already be entirely lost in having to buy cheaper components (esp. dac+amp). What do you think/suggest ?
