Eric, Thank you for the detailed reply - I agree with your conclusions about the options for sound level. It makes sense to play it safe a start with a lower level.
For my everyday listening, I run the Transporter (TP) RCA output into my preamp - mainly for the convenience. The TP really isn't designed to be a pre-amp, and of course surround sound isn't supported. When I want to do serious listening, then the Bryston get switched to balanced. The difference is subtle, but worth it. The primary benefit is a lower noise floor - no buzz or hum, just a black background. I'm in an environment with a lot of RFI, so this is a big plus. For the moment - I'm concentrating on ripping my CD's to FLAC and getting the tagging worked out. Good luck with your new speakers. I've always had Maggies, but the Paradigms have a good reputation. As much as I love the maggies, I must say that the Bryston is my favorite component - the amp the bullet proof and very revealing. It easily showed up the difference between the Squeeze box and the Transporter.
