There is a sample of Birds Feeding on Biscuits, which sounds good even
as mp3, but he used a minidisc recorder and Sony mic*, not to mention
not much mic muff. Maybe if I wasn't such a gear slut I'd stop using
lack of equipment as an excuse not to experiment with recording. 

I wish I knew more about it, for example I would be curious if having a
24 bit signal is valuable for the same reasons it is around here- giving
wiggle room for effects, whereas here it's volume control. Or does that
only apply if your final output is 16 bit?  When I asked about it at
Guitar Center, the sales dude said 24/192 was useless due to losses in
the PC or something to that effect.
