It's not the ears. It's the processing.

I know people who can't hear sh*t, but have nothing wrong with their
actual ears.

My hearing may be better than average since I had undiagnosed bad
eyesight for several years as a child. I relied on my other senses to
make up for it. It's just one possibility.
